a) Try to complete the description under 150 characters, because search engine doesn't read more than 150 characters. Don't make it too short also. If it is too short you will get a message such as "Short Meta Description" while using Google Webmaster Tools.

b) Use your chosen keywords as much as you can in the meta description. The idea behind this is to make it more search engine friendly. Though this description is shown in search result, people barely read this. They mainly read Title and click on any title that matches their desired search.

c) Don't repeat any keywords in meta description. Ideal number of keywords is 3-5.

2. Meta Keywords Tag

Meta Keywords Tag contains keywords for web page and denoted by "keywords" in meta tag. Don't use more than 5 keywords in meta keywords. Anyway, most search engines don't consider these tags when indexing a site. People used to spam the "meta keywords" tag in order to get better search engine rankings. That's why nowadays most reputable search engines don't give any value to this tag.

3. Meta Robots Tag

If you want a particular blog page or post should not be indexed by search engine then you can use this tag. It's simple, only you have to use this tag inside head of each page/post you don't want indexed. For example you can use as below:

<meta name="ROBOTS" content="NOINDEX">

As a result the page/post won't be indexed by search engine which use this tag. However, you can do the same thing so by creating one robots.txt and uploading it in your blog's root directory. Include all page/post url in that text file those you don't want indexed.
